Birdathon Beyond
In the interest of making lemonade out of our current lemony situation, we are doing something different for the Friends of Huntley Meadows Park (FOHMP) Annual Bird-A-Thon this year. Instead of a select group scouring the Park together on one morning, this year EVERYONE can participate, anywhere, anytime for a week in May. The Bird-A-Thon Beyond will be held May 4 – 10. Count birds in your backyard, a local park, or other location near you. After the count is over, email your results to friendsofhmp@gmail.com. Please include the location where you watched, how much time you spent counting birds, and a list of the bird species observed with the number of each species so we can create a full tally.
But wait, there’s more! Even if you don’t count birds, there is another important way that you can contribute - you can make a donation. As always, the Bird-A-Thon is also a fundraiser that supports the Park’s Natural Resource Management (NRM) Intern. Over the years, many on the Board of FOHMP have had the privilege of interacting with the interns in this position, and we all believe they have helped the Park tremendously through assistance with land stewardship and conservation. Additionally, this internship provides a young person with valuable hands-on experience as he or she begins a career in conservation.
Your generous donation will help us reach our goal of $3,000 to fund the 2020 NRM Intern. If we reach our goal, additional donations will be used for supplies requested by the Park staff.
We strongly encourage you to use the Bird-A-Thon PayPal link HERE to donate, but you can also mail a check with the donation form (below) to FOHMP, 3701 Lockheed Blvd, Alexandria, VA 22306. Questions may be directed to friendsofhmp@gmail.com.
The Bird-A-Thon has been a staple of the Huntley Meadows calendar for over 20 years, so we are disappointed we can’t be together this year to celebrate the Park’s bird diversity. However, we look forward to seeing the species our members find in their own corners of the world and appreciate your generosity to this fundraiser.
